Family guy is no stranger to controversy or crossing the line. Whether they are doing an abortion episode or taking a shot at Michael J. Fox, there is very little they won’t do for a laugh. Personally, I would not be surprised if one of the writers on the show is revealed to be a serial killer.
Well at some point in the last 10 years the writers decided to make one of the biggest characters in the show, Stewie, a homosexual. Well, they didn’t outright say it, but it was been heavily hinted at as scene by this YouTube video. Also in an interview with playboy magazine, series creator Seth MacFarlane said that Stewie is in fact gay, to which he later decided wasn’t a good idea and left his sexuality up in the air.
I believe that Seth and his writing team already outed Stewie’s sexuality in a very creative way, without outright saying it.
The first piece of evidence I have is Brian outright asking Stewie if he is “Queer” to which Stewie responds “probably”. In the context of the conversation, it appears that he is asking Stewie if he is gay to which he says yes to. Well, the term Queer itself is pretty ambiguous. In fact, the LGBT community defined Queer as an umbrella term for describing gay, lesbian, and bisexual people. Now, why would Stewie say “probably” to being asked if he is Queer? Well, it’s because in Stewie’s vast vocabulary being asked if he is queer is an open ended question.
Let’s take a look at Stewie’s romantic relationships. Now why a 1-year-old has so many romantic relationships is odd to me but that’s what you get when you’ve been on the air so long and need story lines.
Stewie has had a few females he has been romantically interested in the history of the show. His first girlfriend was Penelope which of course ended in disaster. Next let’s look at his next love interest , Julie. Though Stewie was rejected, he still displayed genuine affection towards her. In fact, most of the relationships he has been in are with human women. An ongoing joke in family guy is that Stewie is in a homosexual relationship with his teddy bear Rupert. He makes numerous references and jokes about the 2 of them going on romantic trips.
The thing is Rupert is not gay. He outright says so (the 1:00 mark). It is worth noting that in the same video, Stewie starts what appears a coming out speech. So why does Stewie envision himself in a homosexual relationship with his teddy bear? Well, its because of thats how he plays with his toys. In a non-throwaway gag, Stewie is shown playing Lion-o and He-Man. Stewie turns to the camera and says “you buy your kids homoerotic dolls and asks what happens…”. Well, Stewie owns those dolls and doing so kind of tells the audience what his future will be and why.
Now for my last piece of evidence, I turn to Stewie’s ancestor Leonardo Da Vinci. Yeah, that Leonardo.
In the episode where Stewie discovers he created the universe, he travels back in time and discovers that he is an exact copy of Leonardo Da Vinci. The events following the death of Leonardo at the hands of Bertrum, Stewie is forced to stay behind and take his place. Now historically Leonardo Da Vinci was heavily suspected of being a homosexual (or at least bi-sexual). In that same episode, Brian mentions Da Vinci’s girlfriend and that Stewie has to pass on his genetic material. Later on the episode, Stewie comes back and says he that he injected his genetic material into his girlfriend, thus saving the universe.
